Yorkshire Heritage Hero visits Newburgh Priory

Angus Ashworth, star of The Yorkshire Auctioneer is presenting a new programme visiting eight big country houses in Yorkshire. In the first episode aired, he visited Newburgh Priory and met Stephen and Alice at the Priory to see what he could find of historical interest.

He visited the alleged final resting place of the body of Oliver Cromwell, the man who tried to cancel Christmas, and who’s daughter Mary lived at Newburgh Priory. Once his body was hung from the London Wall and his decapitated head was taken to the Tower of London, Mary retrieved his body and brought it back to Newburgh and buried it up in the attic and it was then vaulted off like it is now.

Stephen took him on a tour of the farm to see the Christmas tree production and understand what it means to look after and grow Christmas trees. A tree is not just for Christmas, turns out there’s a lot more to it throughout the year.

‘We plant the same number of trees as we harvest, maximising what we have here and look to expand as and when we can’ explain Stephen when talking about the future of Christmas tree farming.

We provide

Stephen meets up with Wilf and his daughters and Angus lends a hand tending to the fraser fir variety of Christmas tree. Each tree needs to have its pine cones removed whilst they’re still soft, and this needs to be completed on every single tree on the farm.
